Shetland is a British television crime drama broadcast on ITV. The series was first broadcast on 12 July 2007 on ITV and has run in two series, both of which are currently being shown. It is based on the eponymous books by Robert Aickman. Aickman, who died in 1989, is the principal author of this saga. The show depicts the events that take place in the fictional North-West Isles of Shetland, where a murder occurs. The show's lead role is an inspector from the fictional North-West Isles Constabulary (NWC), a Scotland-based force that is similar to the Real Detective (No. 2) strand, despite the location of the series. The name of the show has been subject to change throughout the series; at the beginning of the first episode, the BBC website describes the series as being called "Inspector Perez"
The cast has included Kenneth Branagh, Richard McCabe, Jeany Spark and Sarah Smart. The main character, Jimmy Perez, is a highly driven young Shetland native who has been passed over for promotion because of his ethnic background. The second character is Sarah MacKenzie, a detective, who has been pursuing Perez since the first episode. She is attracted to Perez, but he has been in love with the lead detective from the start, Jenny Ryback. During the course of the series, Perez finally discovers that Ryback is in fact a junkie, and the two are allowed to stay together, and eventually get married.
The Shetland series has been produced in association with Kudos Film & Television for ITV and SundanceTV for the United States.
